The area has probably been inhabited since antiquity. A Roman mosaic from Vazza can be found today at the Archaeological Museum of Kefalonia and Maspali hill is believed to be the ancient acropolis. The area’s name is of Italian origin, a combination of the words mangiare ( food) and vino (wine). Raisin and wine production was the village’s most important source of income years ago. Of the three village churches, the oldest one dates back to 1666.
